FAST DECISION-MAKING THROUGH CONNECTED BALL TECHNOLOGY - UEFA EUROPEAN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP EURO 2024
REALISATION
The official match ball of the EURO 2024 European Championship will be equipped with “ConnectedBall Technology” for the first time. This advanced technology, developed in collaboration with Kinexon and produced by adidas, revolutionizes match monitoring and decision-making in soccer. Precise sensor data and advanced analytics enable faster and more accurate assessment of match situations by transmitting accurate ball data to the video assistant referees (VAR) in real time. This allows the officials to precisely track every touch of the ball and determine the position of the ball at all times. The combination of ball position and player movements in particular opens up new perspectives. By using artificial intelligence, this technology supports UEFA's semi-automatic offside detection and thus speeds up the decision-making process during the match.
Inside the ball is a 500Hz Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) motion sensor that detects every movement of the ball with high precision. This sensor provides comprehensive analysis of ball movement, offering valuable insights for coaches and analysts. The sensor is powered by a rechargeable battery that can be charged by induction, ensuring it is always ready for use. The ball's technology meets the highest standards of precision and reliability.
A significant advantage of this innovation is the reduction in the time required to clarify handball and penalty situations. In addition, the precise recording and transmission of ball contacts enables referees to make faster and more informed decisions. The official match ball of the 2024 European Championship thus sets new standards in soccer technology and contributes to a fairer and smoother game.
In addition to the innovative technology, emphasis was placed on an inspiring design and the use of more sustainable materials, such as recycled polyester, renewable raw materials and a water-based print, which is more environmentally friendly than conventional methods.

CHALLENGES
The development department faced major challenges when implementing a sustainability concept for an official UEFA EURO 2024 soccer match ball. It was necessary to ensure the technical performance requirements and at the same time process recycled and renewable raw materials such as corn fibers, sugar cane, cellulose and rubber. This requires innovative approaches in materials research, manufacturing and design, as well as the ability to meet market requirements and regulatory standards. However, through cross-functional collaboration, extensive testing, and feedback from stakeholders, it was possible to develop an innovative soccer ball that meets growing sustainability requirements.
