Potential impact

Make sure that athletes see themselves as role models: Teams and athletes use the train to travel to the venue of the sporting event (also for international journeys to the host country instead of travelling by plane). There are many destinations (especially direct neighbouring countries) that can be reached by train in a reasonable amount of time. Special trains or special compartments can be organised for national teams.

Cost

Action area Traffic - Target: Increase use of environmentally friendly means of transport to and from work.

Potential impact

Action area Energy and climate - Target: Increase travel to and from the city by environmentally friendly means of transport. => Transport (AA3)

Potential impact

Make sure that athletes see themselves as role models: All (national) teams and athletes will only use the train/bus within the host country. This can be achieved, for example, through a voluntary commitment by all teams or athletes to a "no-fly policy" (exceptions for journeys of more than six or eight hours, for example, should be checked).

Depending on the route and the teams' or athletes' accommodation, a combination of train/bus (preferably electric bus) may be necessary and sensible.

Check offers for special compartments for teams or athletes: Are special trains (e.g. direct trains without intermediate stops) necessary and possible for certain destinations?

Potential impact

Organise better public transport connections to the event venue by expanding local public transport capacities on the days of the event (buses, S-Bahn/U-Bahn/tram). This also includes setting up shuttle buses (with alternative drive systems) to sports/event venues/media centres.

Potential impact

Optimise the event/game schedule according to the principle of short distances so that driving distances are as short as possible. For small/medium sporting events, this can be the national championship, which is not organised according to national borders but according to the distance travelled. At major events, this may include a group phase, for example, in which a group plays in a region.

The app can, for example, be extended to include tourist activities in the host city (e.g. the ten highlights of each host city). Electronic train and public transport timetables (in coordination with the responsible transport association(s)) or electronic carpooling platforms/apps could be integrated into the app.

Cost

Action area Traffic - Target: Increase use of environmentally friendly means of transport to and from work.

Potential impact

Set up "fan paths" on foot and/or by bike to the sports venues. These could, for example, be labelled as a "red carpet" or be based on the participating nations/sports. This could, for example, be a main route from the city centre/train station to the sports venues and public viewing. When choosing a location for public viewing, the following should be taken into account: good accessibility on foot, by bike and by public transport. The signposting should be easy to understand and also communicated via the app.

Design the fan routes attractively (with food/drinks, entertainment, culture, information, etc.).

If possible, take this into account in the routing: Places of interest, attractive routes in "green" areas (parks), safe routes (no streets or clear demarcation from streets), attractive neighbourhoods (culture, entertainment), climate adaptation (shading).

Ensure citizen participation (e.g. development and implementation of concepts by the neighbourhoods).

Potential impact

Offer a maximum of one beef dish at each food counter (buffets, restaurant, hospitality area). Products from ruminants, especially cattle, are associated with high GHG emissions, as methane is produced during digestion. In addition, the ratio of meat yield to feed intake is more unfavourable in large animals. The carbon footprint per kg of beef, for example, is around three times that of pork.

Set up all-gender changing rooms and showers. Bear in mind that open changing rooms and showers offer little privacy, which makes many people – whether cis, trans* or inter* – feel uncomfortable or unsafe. It is therefore particularly important to ensure that there is sufficient protective space with individual changing rooms and showers.

Relabel existing toilets (e.g. "All gender toilet" or "Toilet for all genders"). In any case, the following must apply: Inter* and trans* people may also continue to choose toilets for women or men if they identify as women or men respectively. Toilets for people with disabilities should also be reserved for them.

There are a variety of options for new/renovated buildings to install both all-gender single-user toilets and facilities with lockable multiple cubicles, each equipped with sitting toilets and/or urinals and, if necessary, their own washbasins and mirrors.

You can also install toilets that offer additional protection against assault. For example, former men's toilets can be rededicated as "toilets for all genders" and some former women's toilets as toilets for women, inter*, non-binary and trans* people, from which cisgender and endosexual men are excluded.
