Potential impact

Use rental material for all interior furnishings (furniture, room dividers, floors, counters, etc.), electrical infrastructure, pipes, etc. and in connection with appliances (refrigerators, coffee machines, computers, etc.). Rental material is also available for decoration. Do not use decorations and other materials that will not be reused.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Minimise the volume of waste.

Potential impact

Action area Resource cycle - Target: Minimise the need for new purchases and thus the consumption of resources.

Potential impact

If possible, also rent carpets (carpets can potentially become waste after a single use). If it is not possible to rent, used carpets should be reused (in other areas of application).

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Minimise the volume of waste.

Potential impact

Action area Resource cycle - Target: Minimise the need for new purchases and thus the consumption of resources.

Potential impact

Whenever possible, use rental material (without branding). Fences can also be covered by material without branding or branding only at larger intervals. In general: Reduce the number of flags, banners etc. as much as possible (e.g. flags only, flags only on every second flagpole). The privacy screen, for instance for the waste container collection point, can do without branding.

When planning and selecting materials, make sure that the selected materials are suitable for subsequent use. If possible, make sure that the material you choose is made from recycled material.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Minimise the volume of waste.

Potential impact

Action area Resource cycle - Target: Implement sustainable procurement and supply chain management.

Potential impact

Subsequent utilisation: Re-use/upcycle flags, banners, privacy screens/fence covers etc. (e.g. as bags, underlay for graffiti). Appropriate recipients should be sought for upcycling and reuse (e.g. material initiatives, NGOs, schools).

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Minimise the volume of waste.

Potential impact

Action area Resource cycle - Target: Maximise the life cycle of purchased products and ensure the long-term use of other resources.

Potential impact

Collect unavoidable (construction) waste generated during assembly and dismantling separated by type of waste and – where possible – send it to high-quality recycling. Hazardous waste must be collected separately.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Minimise the volume of waste.

Potential impact

Action area Sports facilities and infrastructure - Target: Carry out refurbishment, extension and general construction measures in accordance with sustainable building requirements.

Potential impact

Place waste bins at regular intervals on the paths to the sports venue and to (other) event locations to collect the waste incurred. First analyse the environment/terrain and then determine the size, number and location of the waste bins. Similarly, specify the size, number and location of the waste bins in the sports venue.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Avoid littering regardless of whether in nature / countryside or in urban areas.

Potential impact

Provide collection points for separate collection (with separate containers and labelling for the relevant waste categories) at key locations (entrances/exits to/from car parks, public transport exits/entrances, entrance controls to sports and event venues, etc.). Waste bins in front of the fence / before and at the check points are important. Depending on the safety concept, high quantities of lightweight packaging (especially PET bottles, especially in warm weather) and comparatively high purity of the category can result. Maintain a sufficient density of recycling islands (based on demand and possibilities). Plan/mark key locations for collection points in advance.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Collect the remaining waste separately by type and recycle elsewhere in as ecologically sound a manner as possible.

Potential impact

Provide a sufficient number of waste bins and empty them regularly. Prevent waste bins from overflowing and keep the collection points and the surrounding area clean. Pay attention to hygiene (especially important for food waste). This applies equally to the public area and the backstage area.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Collect the remaining waste separately by type and recycle elsewhere in as ecologically sound a manner as possible.

Potential impact

Keep paths, squares etc. clean. Littering must be avoided at all costs: Litter attracts even more littering! Make sure that the area near the collection points is clean and – if necessary – clean it during the games/events. Clarify the responsibilities (sports venue, local authority) in advance.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Avoid littering regardless of whether in nature / countryside or in urban areas.

Potential impact

Only purchase drinks in reusable systems: beer kegs, taps, returnable crates and bottles (juices, mineral water, soft drinks, etc.). No disposable bottles and no bottles in cardboard boxes or shrink-wrapped in foil will be delivered. Exceptions are champagne bottles and – if not possible – wine bottles (please check).

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Use reusable systems wherever possible.

Potential impact

Action area Resource cycle - Target: Minimise the need for new purchases and thus the consumption of resources.

Potential impact

Operators of kiosks, fast-food restaurants, beer gardens and similar establishments throughout the city of the venue will be sensitised to only serve reusable cups. This applies in particular during the sporting event, but should be introduced beforehand if possible and continued on a permanent basis.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Use reusable systems wherever possible.

Potential impact

Action area Resource cycle - Target: Minimise the need for new purchases and thus the consumption of resources.

Potential impact

If mandatory reusable packaging is not yet regulated for events on public land in the city, this should be defined in the waste statutes (e.g. in Munich and Nuremberg), in a procurement ordinance or statute (e.g. in Berlin) or specific statutes for major events (e.g. market statutes in Weimar). All permitted containers for serving food and drinks should be explicitly listed. Example: exclusively reusable containers with a deposit, with the exception of uncoated, unprinted and compostable napkins and paper bags (e.g. for fries; specify maximum weight or maximum size). A regulation for existing leases for stand operators, e.g. in the area surrounding the stadium or for caterers in the stadium, should be included. In the case of retroactive effect on existing contracts, it must be ensured that the change is reasonable (costs, turnover) and that there is a sufficient transition period. It should also be noted that a procurement statute only applies to the administration. For this reason, an additional or alternative addition to the waste bylaws or – even better – separate bylaws for major events are recommended.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Use reusable systems wherever possible.

Potential impact

Action area Resource cycle - Target: Minimise the need for new purchases and thus the consumption of resources.

Potential impact

Use reusable systems for transport and outer packaging wherever possible. If no suitable systems are available or the additional price is unreasonable, exceptions must be applied for. Use reusable systems for transport packaging from suppliers, caterers, etc. [e.g. (plastic) baskets/tubs for bread rolls, pretzels]. All suppliers, caterers etc. are obliged to take back the packaging.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Use reusable systems wherever possible.

Potential impact

Inform and train employees and volunteers (regularly) on all waste management topics. For this purpose, create easy-to-understand educational materials in advance.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Make all relevant stakeholders aware of waste avoidance, waste separation and the correct handling of waste and motivate them to adopt sustainable behaviour.

Potential impact

Action area Education for Sustainable Development - Target: Raise awareness for waste prevention, waste separation and the correct handling of waste among all relevant stakeholders and motivate them to adopt sustainable behaviour => Waste (AA6)

Potential impact

Take into account all waste specifications in the contracts with caterers, suppliers, assembly companies, etc.

Cost

Action area Waste - Target: Minimise the volume of waste.
